Hedge Trimming in Auckland: How Often, How Much, and What to Expect

Hedges are one of the most common reasons Auckland homeowners pick up the phone to a gardener, and for good reason. A crisp, well-shaped hedge does more for the look of a property than almost anything else in the garden. Here is what we tell people when they ask how often theirs needs doing.

How often should you trim? For most formal hedges in central Auckland, two to three trims a year keeps them genuinely sharp. One trim a year and the hedge slowly loses its edges and starts to bulge. Fast growers like buxus, photinia, griselinia and pittosporum can push out a lot of growth in a warm Auckland season, so a quarterly cut is not excessive for those.

Why technique matters more than you would think. A hedge is not just trimmed flat. The face should be cut very slightly wider at the base than the top, so light reaches the bottom and the hedge stays green all the way down rather than going bare and woody at the bottom. Cutting back into old wood at the wrong time, or too hard, can leave bare patches that take a long time to fill. Reading the plant and knowing how far to take it is the part that takes real experience.
